A living museum
The estate, formerly the private residence of Louis A. Graves, was the creation of architect, William C. Bull who designed many of the stately Victorian structures in the Shires of Vermont. Our home was built at the end of the Victorian age when the design fashion was becoming less ornate. This is evident by the modest facade yet elaborate interiors.
Elegant Decay
Our concept is to be a living museum that celebrates the gilded era of the northeastern United States at the turn of the century. While we constantly improve our physical spaces, over time, we see this as a restoration and not a renovation. We wish to strike a balance of upgrading and restoring parts of the property without detracting from its authenticity. This means we may intentionally leave some things in their current historic state. We feel this is what gives character and we want to capture the natural condition that perfectly suits our rural new England setting and the homes fundamental and distinctive characteristics. We see this is a very important part of our concept that new buildings can not replicate.
South Shire offers an answer to a question that has long intrigued me regarding hotels in North America: Why do so many of them seem to overlook distinctive character and charm? These qualities shape a unique experience and imbue each building with a distinct personality that sets them apart.

We think of the South Shire as a Grand Residence on a small intimate scale. We hope to deliver the same breadth of services and efficacy expected in large luxury hotels yet in a more humane, personalized setting. Ours is a guest experience built on the long-lost style of service and our ambition is that guests will check out with enduring memories and the desire to return.
Authenticity and genuineness are maintained in all points of our guest's journey from initial inquiry to stay and post-departure. Our goal is to be the premium destination accommodation of choice and a point of pride for the Town of Bennington and to enhance the attraction of visiting our village. The choice of discerning locals to recommend to their family and friends from out of town and the preferred destination for luxury travelers coming from the tri-state area and beyond.
